When asking for a favor or help, you can use different expressions. Most of them are formed with the verb poder (can) and ayudar (help), and end with the expression por favor (please). The structures are very simple in both cases. We will almost always use a question to express this in order to be polite.

Poder with Infinitives

Asking for a favor refers to asking someone to do something for you. The most common expression is formed by the verb poder + infinitive.

Raquel, ¿puedes venir al cine, por favor?

Raquel, can you come to the movie theater, please?

¿Puedes traer unas bebidas de mango, por favor?

Can you bring some mango drinks, please?

¿Puedes comprar kiwis para la macedonia, por favor?

Can you buy some kiwis for the fruit salad, please?

¿Puedes mover el sofá, por favor? Está lejos de la televisión

Can you move the sofa, please? It’s far away from the TV

Ayudar a with Infinitives

Another useful expression while asking for a favor is formed by the verb ayudar a + infinitive.

When you want to specify who the favor is for or to whom the action is being done, you add the indirect object pronouns corresponding to that person(s). Although in English you wouldn’t normally ask for help saying You help me with these exercises, please?, in Spanish it’s correct and polite to say it like that.

¿Me ayudas a hacer los ejercicios, por favor?

Can you help me do the exercises, please?

¿Nos ayudas a preparar una macedonia, por favor?

Can you help us prepare a fruit salad, please?

¿Me ayudas a colgar el cuadro de David?

Can you help me hang David’s painting?

¿Le ayudas a recordar el número de teléfono de Marta?

Can you help him remember Marta’s telephone number?

Notice that you may combine both verbs using poder + ayudar a + infinitive.

¿Me puedes ayudar a cortar estas grosellas, por favor?

Can you help me cut these redcurrants, please?

¿Nos puedes ayudar a preparar la cena, por favor?

Can you help us prepare dinner, please?

Asking for a Favor: Accepting and Declining

In case you accept, you can use some of the expressions below. Read the short conversations to practice asking for a favor.

  • Claro que sí, enseguida (of course, right away)
  • Con mucho gusto (my pleasure)
  • Ahora mismo (right now)
  • Por supuesto (of course)
  • Sí, no te preocupes (yes, don’t worry)

¿Puedes ayudarme a traer las bolsas, por favor?

Claro que sí, enseguida. ¿Necesitas algo más?

Can you help me bring the bags, please?

Of course, right away. Do you need anything else?

¿Puedes comprar pollo, por favor?

Por supuesto, ahora voy a la carnicería.

Can you buy some chicken, please?

Of course, I’m going to the butcher’s shop now.

However, if you are going to decline, you may add a reason. Check the examples provided.

  • Lo siento, pero no puedo (I’m sorry, but I can’t)
  • Lo siento, pero no es mi problema (I’m sorry, but it’s not my problem)
  • Lo lamento, pero no es posible (I’m sorry, but it’s not possible)

Antonio, ¿puedes venir al despacho, por favor?

Lo siento, pero ahora no puedo. Estoy ocupado.

Antonio, can you come to the office, please?

I’m sorry but I can’t now. I’m busy.

Quiero aprender. ¿Me enseñas a preparar una sopa, por favor?

Lo siento, pero no es posible empezar ahora. Es tarde.
