The Spanish Preterite (Pretérito Indefinido) is mainly translated with the English Past Simple. Most of their forms are regular. However, in this article, we are going to go through some irregular verbs in Spanish Preterite tense that have not only an irregular stem, but also irregular endings. Let’s see how to form them.

Irregular Verbs in Spanish Preterite

First of all, let’s review when to use the Spanish Preterite. It is used to describe past actions, to express a sequence of past actions and it is also very common to use the Spanish Preterite to talk about people’s biographies.

There are some irregular verbs in Spanish Preterite that you need to study by heart. These are the verbs ser (to be), ir (to go) and ver (to see, to watch).

The verbs we will now examine are irregular both in their stem and in their endings. These are the verbs estar (to be), poner (to put), poder (to be able to or can), saber (to know) and tener (to have). Their stems in this tense are as follows:

Poder in Preterite

The verb poder means to be able to and it is also one of the irregular verbs in Spanish Preterite that change both their stem and endings.

Victoria no pudo ir a la casa de sus abuelos el fin de semana pasado.

Victoria couldn’t go to her grandparents’ house last weekend.

Poner means to put. It is one of the most popular irregular verbs in Spanish Preterite.
