La mitad (half)

La mitad de is followed a noun or pronoun. It means half.

La mitad del tiempo que pasé en Holanda, viví en Amsterdam.

Half the time I spent in Holland, I lived in Amsterdam.

La mitad de los ríos subterráneos de la región están contaminados.

Half of the underground rivers of the region are polluted.

La mitad de nosotras ya hemos ido alguna vez a una discoteca.

Half of us have already been to a dance club.

La mitad de ellos no llegan temprano a la escuela.

Half of them do not come to school early.

La mitad can be used on its own when the noun or pronoun is understood or has just been mentioned.

El doble (double, twice)

El doble de is followed by a noun means double or twice as much something.

Mi trabajo tiene el doble de responsabilidad.

My job has twice as much responsibility.

Mi hijo tiene el doble de deberes.

My son has twice as much homework.

La próxima vez, ponle a la tortilla el doble de sal.

Next time, put twice as much salt on the omelet.

El doble can be used on its own when the noun is understood or has just been mentioned.
