An idiom is a group of words whose meaning cannot be predicted from the individual meaning of its separate parts. In this article, we are going to learn some Spanish idioms with ojos (eyes).

Idioms with Ojos

Spanish has a lot of idioms with ojos (or with its singular form ojo). Following are some of the most popular ones with some examples of use.

Clavar los ojos en (to fix one’s yes on)

¿Conoces a ese chico? Tiene los ojos clavados en ti.

Do you know that boy? He’s got his eyes fixed on you.

Me he comprado un coche extraño y todos los ojos están clavados en él.

I bought a bizarre car and everyone’s eyes are fixed on it.

Costar un ojo de la cara (to cost an arm and a leg)

Ten cuidado con el bolso, me costó un ojo de la cara.

Be careful with the bag, it cost me an arm and a leg.

Estudiar en una universidad privada cuesta un ojo de la cara.

Studying at a private university costs an arm and a leg.

Dormir con los ojos abiertos (to sleep with one eye open)

En una situación tan delicada hay que dormir con los ojos abiertos.

In such a delicate situation, one has to sleep with one eye open.

Me robaron en la calle ayer, y ahora duermo con los ojos abiertos.

I got mugged on the street yesterday, and now I sleep with one eye open.

En un abrir y cerrar de ojos (in the twinkling of an eye)

El zapatero me hizo la copia de la llave en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

The cobbler made me a copy of the key in the twinkling of an eye.

Hacía sol. De repente, cambió el tiempo y comenzó a llover en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

It was sunny. All of a sudden, the weather changed and it started raining in the twinkling of an eye.

Cuatro ojos ven más que dos (two heads are better than one)

Siéntate y revisa el texto conmigo, cuatro ojos ven más que dos.

Sit down and review the text with me; two heads are better than one.

Ayúdame a buscar aparcamiento, cuatro ojos ven más que dos.

Help me look for a parking space, two heads are better than one.
