En – physical space

En can be used to talk about the physical space where something is located.

La toalla está en el coche.

The towel is in the car.

En – means of transportation

En can also be used for many means of transportation.

Cada día voy y vuelvo del trabajo en metro.

Every day I go to and from work by subway.

Nunca voy a ninguna parte en taxi, es demasiado caro.

I never go anywhere by taxi, it’s too expensive.

Cada dos semanas viajo de Bilbao a Bruselas en avión.

Every two weeks I travel from Bilbao to Brussels by plane.

Moverse en moto por la ciudad es demasiado peligroso, hay demasiado tráfico.

Riding around the city by motorcycle is too dangerous, there’s too much traffic.

En vs A

There are two exceptions: you say a pie (on foot) or a caballo (on horseback).

Mañana iremos a trabajar a pie para hacer ejercicio.

Tomorrow we will go to work on foot to do some exercise.

Con este tráfico, es más rápido ir a pie que en coche.

With this traffic, it is faster go on foot than by car.

Hace doscientos años la gente se movía por aquí a caballo.

Two hundred years ago people moved around here on horseback.

Durante mis vacaciones monto a caballo siempre que puedo.

During my vacation I go horseback riding whenever I can.
