Indirect object pronouns in Spanish can be objects or people, although the most common situation is that the indirect object is a person, instead of a thing.

The indirect object pronoun answers the question To whom? or For whom? the action of the verb is performed.

What did I throw? The ball. Therefore, ball is the direct object.
