How to Form Spanish Numbers over 1000

Spanish Numbers over 1000: Mil

To form the numbers multiples of 1000, you simply place the number of thousands in front of mil (without joining) as in the examples below.

Numbers from 1001 to 1999

The word for 1,000 is simply mil, without the number for one in front. To form numbers from 1,000 to 1,999, you should put mil before the rest of the numbers.

Also, note that mil does not have a separate plural form. There is a word miles, but that’s used only when you want to refer to thousand of things and not the actual number 1,000.

Numbers from 2001 to 999999

To form numbers 2,001 up to one million, you should place how many thousands before mil and then the rest of the number. Pay attention to the following examples.

Numbers with Nouns

Numbers agrees with the noun they modify in gender. Even though mil does not change, you should still need to modify the hundreds.

Number 1 with Nouns

Remember that when using a number that ends with –uno, you drop the final –o in front of a masculine noun, and change the –o into an –a in front of a feminine noun. This rule also applies even though mil does not change.
