The Letter Ñ

The letter –ñ– (called eñe), is a separate letter of the Spanish alphabet. In dictionaries it is listed after entries beginning with the letter –n– and before entries beginning with –o-.

The eñe is a letter that is used in the modern Latin alphabet and is not unique to the Spanish language. However, it has come to be representative of the Spanish language and culture.

The eñe has quite an interesting history. It represented the joining or merging of a double –n– in words, with the symbol ~ written above the –n– representative of the second –n-. It gradually evolved into an independent character. An example of one such word is the Spanish word año, which in old Spanish was spelled anno.

The eñe is pronounced close to the -ny- in the English word canyon. The following is a list of words containing the letter eñe:

El cumpleaños de Iñaki

Mañana es el cumpleaños del niño pequeño de la familia Muñoz. Se llama Iñaki. Tiene los ojos grandes de color marrón y el pelo ondulado y rubio.

Iñaki espera una gran fiesta. Pero su madre es muy tacaña. Además, no son tiempos para gastar mucho. Toda la familia le tiene mucho cariño al niño, pero es caro preparar una gran fiesta, en casa o en otro lugar.

Iñaki también quiere ropa nueva para cumpleaños. Le gustaría dejar de llevar esa camisa gastada y tener una nueva. Y para comer, quiere su pastel favorito: de piña.

Hoy es el día y cumple ocho años. Se levanta, se viste y baja a la cocina a desayunar. Cree que nadie se acuerda de que hoy es su cumpleaños. Nadie le dice nada. El niño se siente triste.

Va a su habitación y se sienta en la silla. Oye unos ruidos. Baja otra vez y…¡sorpresa! Toda su familia y sus compañeros de clase están allí para celebrar el cumpleaños de Iñaki. Gritan y cantan: «¡Feliz cumpleaños!». Su padre tiene un gran pastel de piña. ¡No se lo puede creer!
