Spanish Definite Articles
Before we go over those guidelines, let’s recall the four Spanish translations of the English definite article (the), which depend on the gender and number of the noun.

When to Use Spanish Definite Articles
You should use Spanish definite articles in the following situations.
Abstract Ideas or Concepts
With nouns that refer to objects in general, abstract ideas or concepts, you should use Spanish definite articles. For example, with nouns such as
La madera flota en el agua.
Wood floats in water.
El amor y la salud son muy importantes para mí.
Love and health are very important to me.
Groups
Also use Spanish definite articles with social groups (nationality, ethnicity…). This use require the noun and article in the plural (
Los ingleses son muy puntuales. Para los franceses es muy importante la cortesía.
The English are very punctual. Politeness is very important for the French.
Esta medida afecta a los ricos y a los pobres, especialmente a los desempleados.
This measure affects both the rich and the poor, especially the unemployed.
Los musulmanes, los cristianos y los judíos convivieron durante décadas en la Península Ibérica.
Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in the Iberian Peninsula for decades.
Los rusos, los ingleses, los suecos y los alemanes no tienen muchas cosas en común.
Russians, Brits, Swedes and Germans don’t have many things in common.
Certain Geographical Nouns
The definite article is used with the names of some countries, cities, regions, and streets, and with the names of seas and mountains.
Este verano vamos a pasar unos días en la Provenza. Nos encanta esa región francesa, ¿la conoces?
This summer we’ll spend a few days in Provence. We love that region of France, do you know it?
En Europa solo hay leones en el zoológico. En realidad viven en la sabana.
In Europe, there are only lions in the zoo. Actually, they live in the savannah.
Me dedico a pescar en el Mediterráneo. Me encanta mi trabajo.
I work as a fisherman in the Mediterranean sea. I love my job.
Personal Titles
You must use Spanish definite articles when speaking about a person with a title.
El rey de Inglaterra tiene diez palacios.
The king of England has ten palaces.
¿Cuándo vuelve el señor Antonio de Italia?
When does Mr. Antonio come back from Italy?
Certain Time Expressions
The definite article is used with the days of the week, seasons of the year, and time of the day.
Los miércoles y los viernes tengo clase de francés. ¿Nos vemos el lunes?
On Wednesdays and Fridays I have French class. Should we meet on Monday?
El hombre llegó a la luna en el verano del año 1969.
Man walked on the moon in the summer of 1969.
Body Parts and Items of Clothing
The definite article is used instead of the possessive adjective (
Me duele la cabeza y tengo fiebre. Creo que tengo gripe.
I have a headache and a fever. I think I have the flu.
Tienes una mancha en el jersey y tienes los zapatos sucios.
You have a stain on your sweater and your shoes are dirty.
Names of Languages
Use Spanish definite articles in front of the names of languages except where the language is preceded by certain verbs like
El chino es un idioma difícil de aprender.
Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
Yo quiero aprender chino, pero es un idioma difícil.
I want to learn Chinese, but it is a difficult language.
Exercises
There are many other situations in which the definite article may be required, but it often difficult to categorize every single example. You may notice that some of the English translations don’t include an article when the Spanish example does. In quite a few contexts, the article is simply not used in English where it is used in Spanish.
